Dale: Well Bill, your line of products certainly has made an impact on the show circuit, but I'm particularly interested today in your new Three-In-One product. Can you describe it for me? Bill: Jane and Rick Fish of Source Ménagerie had been after me for several years to develop a one-step product that would reduce the bathing time from our highly successful 3-step programme, but still give excellent overall results. They felt that many of our customers were using our programme to prepare for shows, but were using competitor's products to give them a quick solution between show baths. They also thought a one-step would open-up the 'pet' market that did not want the complication of purchasing the 4 different products that make-up our programme. At first I was reluctant to proceed, as I felt that products of that type, both on the human and canine market, failed to provide satisfactory results. You see, until Duurstede® Three-In-One, the only way to make a one-step was to mix a product where the shampoo is weak thereby leaving behind some of the conditioning agents. Dale: Oh, I see, so by being a poor shampoo, you got some conditioning because it didn't clean the conditioning agents all away. Bill: That's right, and this was totally unsatisfactory to me to have a poor shampoo, so I threw the idea out to our R&D people in Milan and Toronto. Initially they mimicked my concerns and the project got shelved. Then, this spring we took a look at it again and realized that if we could find specific conditioning agents that absorbed quickly into the skin and hair and a shampoo formula that didn't like just those agents, we'd have a great product. Dale: That sounds like a pretty big order, but from my experiences with you, that has never stopped you in the past! Bill: That's right! So we went to work and found that Retinyl Palminate which is an ester of vitamin A, Tocopheryl Acetate or vitamin E and Panthenol which is a Vitamin B complex met our criteria and when we added glycerin, which is a wonderful humectant and emollient, we found we had a great formulation. Dale: So let me see if I've got this right...these ingredients are excellent conditioning agents that absorb quickly into the hair and skin and at the same time the shampooing agents in the Three-In-One aren't really fond of them? Bill: You've got it...then we added two more important ingredients...hydrolized wheat protein to bond to damaged areas of the hair and Tetrasodium EDTA which is a chelating agent that bonds to minerals in your water to stop the minerals from bonding to your dog's coat. Dale: That would be great for people in hard water areas! Bill: Yes, because when minerals bond to the coat, they make it look very dull. Dale: So now you have a shampoo and conditioner, but you call this Three-In-One? Bill: It is a three-in-one because we then added the same ingredient that we use in our highly successful Duurstede Revitalizer Polyquaternium 7 which is a very effective antistatic agent and protectant. Dale: Now you have a true shampoo, conditioner and protectant all-in-one! Bill: Well actually it is almost a four-in-one, as we added a special colour to the product that helps eliminate yellow from your dog's coat. This makes black coats blacker and white coats whiter. It is really an overall coat colour enhancer. Dale: Is there anything else that makes this product different from your existing product line? Bill: We use Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil in this product for the first time. We have always used Eucalyptus Oil, but this variety has a slightly 'sweeter' aroma than our previous one. Dale: It looks to me like you have another winner on your hands! Thank you for your time and I look forward to trying this on my dogs at home. Bill: Thank you Dale and I'll call you when we launch two more innovative products over the next year.
